Best audio noise removing freeware?

A year ago, I stripped the audio out of a file with VirtualDub, cleaned it up amazingly, and put it back in. For the life of me, I can't remember what the program was that cleaned the audio but I did about 3 hours of web research to find it originally and I'd prefer to not repeat that research project. Any suggestions? I know it's pretty popular freeware.
