How can I keep cats from defacating on the side of my house where it is all dirt?

While this won't deter cats from entering an area, it may deter them from doing their business: put down a layer of gravel/small stones. I have a partial dirt floor crawl space that used to be fair game, as well as garden areas, and I have found it very effective.
