Under UK Law is there a time limit for the police to charge someone over a criminal allegation.?

I have been accused of some crime (i havent commited) by the police in UK. I havent been charged or cautioned (anything as such), but it has been noted on my record. Is there a time limit for police to act/charge me over an allegation, and if so what is it?
